what are the best candles to burn?

I have a 20-30ft. open staircase, so it needs to be a very strong but light sented candle. I do have partylite candles, walmart brand candles, and none seem to be working the way i want them to. I am also very concious about leaving them burn too long. a few yrs ago, we lived in a apt. complex and the idot next door to us let her kids play around a candle, the candle got knocked over and onto a electrical outlet and well, the fire started there and caught our place too.
